Fragments of LSU rDNA and COI mtDNA genes were sequenced in Paramecium tetraurelia strains originating from different continents, i.e. from Australia (Sydney), Europe (Spain, Poland), Asia (Israel, India, Japan) and North America (Indiana) in order to investigate intra-specific polymorphism in this species. Phylogenetic trees (based on analyses using the NJ, MP and BI methods) revealed that P. tetraurelia strains from Australia, Europe, North America and Asia (Israel, Japan) belong to one group…

Paramecium sexaurelia – IntraSpecific Polymorphism and Relationships with other Paramecium aurelia spp . , Revealed by Cytochrome b Sequence Data
TLDR
The urgent need for further work and more intense sampling of these “rare” species, in order to understand the status and the relationships of P. sexaurelia and P. dodecaurelia within the P. aurelia species complex is illustrated.
New Stands of Species of the Paramecium aurelia Complex; is the Occurrence of Particular Species Limited by Temperature Barriers?
TLDR
Analysis of data on the distribution of the Paramecium aurelia species complex in warm "tropical" zones on different continents may suggest such preferences for some species, including P. sexaurelia, may suggest climatic zones the main factor limiting the occurrence of species of the P. a Aurelia complex.
Paramecium sexaurelia--intra-specific polymorphism and relationships with other Paramecium aurelia spp., revealed by cytochrome b sequence data.
TLDR
Data shows that for some species within this complex, species status may be less static and more dynamic than originally thought, and general investigations on the speciation process be conducted within and between species of the P. aurelia species complex.

New, world-wide data on the distribution of species of the Paramecium aurelia complex (Ciliophora, Protozoa).
This is the first report on the presence of P. biaurelia in Tasmania, an island that has probably never been investigated before for the occurrence of the P. aurelia species. P. tetraurelia was
Variability in Secondary Structure of 18S Ribosomal RNA as Topological Marker for Identification of Paramecium species
TLDR
It can be deduced that variable regions are more helpful in differentiating the species at interspecific level rather than at intraspecific level, and among Paramecium caudatum pakistanicus, Tetrahymena thermophila, Drosophila melanogaster, and Homo sapiens.
Species of the Paramecium aurelia complex in Russia: new stands and overall distribution.
TLDR
The distribution of species of the Paramecium aurelia complex in Eurasia with emphasis on findings in Russia is discussed and new stands of P. novaurelia in Vladivostok, Russian Far East are recorded.
Species of the Paramecium aurelia complex in Italy.
New stands of Paramecium pentaurelia were recorded in Valmarana, Veneto region in Italy and one stand of P. primaurelia was found at the same locality.

Genetic analysis of the Paramecium aurelia species complex (Protozoa: Ciliophora) by classical and molecular methods
TLDR
Investigations into inter‐ and intraspecific differentiation of strains originating from remote habitats within species of the Paramecium aurelia complex showed that all species in the complex possessed characteristic band patterns and the majority were also polymorphic intra‐specifically.
Two species of the Paramecium aurelia complex (Ciliophora, Protista) from the Black Sea region (Russia) with their RAPD-PCR fingerprints characteristics
TLDR
RAPD-PCR fingerprints were obtained for the newly identified P. tetraurelia and P. pentaurelia strains and compared with the fingerprints of other strains of these two species, which showed 100% similarity of fingerprints of strains within the species.
Paramecium aurelia Revisited

    The Journal of eukaryotic microbiology
  • 2005
TLDR
The relatively conserved subregion of ITS2, determined from transcript secondary structure, is a tool for identifying the level of the biological species in the absence of knowledge of sexual compatibility in both micro‐ and macro‐eukaryote species complexes.
Intraspecific Genetic Variation in Paramecium Revealed by Mitochondrial Cytochrome c Oxidase I Sequences
TLDR
This is the first report of intraspecific variation in free‐living protozoans based on mitochondrial sequence data, and the results show that the high variation in mitochondrial DNA makes it a suitable marker for intrapecific and population genetic studies.
Intraspecific variation of diagnostic rDNA genes in Paramecium dodecaurelia, P. tredecaurelia and P. quadecaurelia (Ciliophora: Oligohymenophorea)
TLDR
This is the first analysis of the 5’end fragment of LSU rRNA at the intraspecific level in the P. aurelia complex, showing that the fragment seems very useful at this level.
Data on the occurrence of species of the Paramecium aurelia complex world-wide
TLDR
The greatest data on distributionand frequency of occurrence of the particular species of the P. aurelia complex concerns Europe, and the following conclusions were drawn: P. novaurelia is a dominantspecies, while P. primaurelia (in 103 habitats) is also characteristic but less frequent.
Biogeography and dispersal of micro-organisms: a review emphasizing protists
This review summarizes data on the biogeography and dispersal of bacteria, microfungi and selected protists, such as dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, testate amoebae, and ciliates. Furthermore, it
Diversity and geographic distribution of ciliates (Protista: Ciliophora)
TLDR
The data indicate that ciliate biogeography is similar to that of plants and animals, but with an increased proportion of cosmopolites, favouring the moderate endemicity model.
Global trends of whole-genome duplications revealed by the ciliate Paramecium tetraurelia
TLDR
It is shown that in the unicellular eukaryote Paramecium tetraurelia, a ciliate, most of the nearly 40,000 genes arose through at least three successive whole-genome duplications.
