Molecular mechanisms for the evolution of bacterial morphologies and growth modes
@article{Randich2015MolecularMF, title={Molecular mechanisms for the evolution of bacterial morphologies and growth modes}, author={Amelia M. Randich and Yves V. Brun}, journal={Frontiers in Microbiology}, year={2015}, volume={6} }
Bacteria exhibit a rich diversity of morphologies. Within this diversity, there is a uniformity of shape for each species that is replicated faithfully each generation, suggesting that bacterial shape is as selectable as any other biochemical adaptation. We describe the spatiotemporal mechanisms that target peptidoglycan synthesis to different subcellular zones to generate the rod-shape of model organisms Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. We then demonstrate, using the related genera…

Independent evolution of shape and motility allows evolutionary flexibility in Firmicutes bacteria
- BiologyNature Ecology &Evolution
- 2016
It is shown that cell shape and Motility are not coupled, and that transitions to and from flagellar motility are common and strongly associated with lifestyle (free-living or host-associated), and that the independent evolution of shape and motility in this group might allow a greater evolutionary flexibility.
Cell wall-deficient, L-form bacteria in the 21st century: a personal perspective
- BiologyBiochemical Society transactions
- 2017
Key findings included the discovery that L-forms use an unusual blebbing, or tubulation and scission mechanism to proliferate, which is completely independent of the normal FtsZ-based division machinery and seems to require only an increased rate of membrane synthesis, leading to an increased surface area-to-volume ratio.
