A wide range of approaches is available to parasitologists to aid in specific parasite identification and to formulate phylogenetic relationships. This review emphasises the usefulness of molecular genetic techniques, especially DNA-based procedures, in addressing problems of identification, characterisation and phylogeny of parasites.
