BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Oxalobacter formigenes is a member of the intestinal flora that degrades oxalate. This bacterium maintains an important symbiotic relation with its hosts by regulating oxalic acid absorption in the intestine as well as oxalic acid concentrations in plasma.
