We review studies that have used molecular markers to address ecological and microevolutionary processes in parasites. Our goal is to highlight areas of research that may be of particular interest in relation to the parasitic lifestyle, and to draw attention to areas that require additional study. Topics include species identification, phylogeography, host specificity and speciation, population genetic structure, modes of reproduction and transmission patterns, and searching for loci under…
Influence of life history traits on the population genetic structure of parasitic helminths: a minireview.
TLDR
In this short review targeted to parasitologists, how life history traits influence the population genetic structure of parasitic helminths is summarized.

Flexibility of co-evolutionary patterns in ectoparasite populations: genetic structure and diversity in Apodemus mice and their lice
TLDR
In the analysis of several sympatric parasite populations, strong evidence is found for the link between the width of host specificity and genetic diversity of parasites.
Parasite co-structure: broad and local scale approaches.
TLDR
A brief review of how co-structure studies in parasite systems can be used to address ecological, evolutionary, and epidemiological questions is provided.

A Century of Parasitology
TLDR
This chapter is tasked with reflecting on the development of microevolutionary concepts in the field of parasitology over the past 100 years, since publication of the first volume of The Journal of Parasitology (JP).

Host specificity driving genetic structure and diversity in ectoparasite populations: Coevolutionary patterns in Apodemus mice and their lice
TLDR
Analysis of large‐scale molecular data on the louse Polyplax serrata and its hosts, mice of the genus Apodemus, across a broad range of European localities finds strong support for the prediction that parasites with narrower host specificity possess a lower level of genetic diversity and a deeper pattern of interpopulation structure as a result of limited dispersal and smaller effective population size.

TLDR
Many additional empirical studies are needed to characterize basic features of parasite populations, including the spatial distribution and group size of random mating populations and levels of gene flow among parasite subpopulations.
Genetic structure in natural populations of flukes and snails: a practical approach and review
TLDR
This work proposes a simplified, indicative framework for conducting analyses of population structure in hosts and parasites, and focuses on flukes and snails, highlighting important biological traits with regard to population structure.
LIFE CYCLES SHAPE PARASITE EVOLUTION: COMPARATIVE POPULATION GENETICS OF SALMON TREMATODES
TLDR
Variation in life cycles can shape parasite evolution by predisposing them to vastly different genetic structures, and it is proposed that knowledge of parasite life cycles will help predict important evolutionary processes such as speciation, coevolution, and the spread of drug resistance.
Inferring infection processes of a parasitic nematode using population genetics
TLDR
The distribution of genetic differentiation in a population of the parasitic nematode Strongyloides ratti divided between rat hosts was determined and it is found that the observed levels of genetic diversity and differentiation in the study population are consistent with low to moderate rates of self-reinfection and inconsistent with high rates.
