Distinct molecular mechanisms underlying immunodeficiency caused by three different naturally occurring point mutations within the collagen-like domain of human mannose-binding protein (MBP; also known as mannose-binding lectin) have been revealed by introduction of analogous mutations into rat serum MBP.
