β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs) form a critical interface between extracellular and intracellular environments, linking signals generated in the sympathetic nervous system to alterations in cellular function at specific target sites. It is now clear that the ability of β-ARs to alter cellular function is dependent on their close association with a large host of intracellular effectors which are responsible for second messenger generation, receptor trafficking, and receptor desensitization.
