Pyrococcus furiosus ferredoxin is a small protein (MW 7500) containing an Fe 4 S 4 cluster which readily converts into an Fe 3 S 4 form. Incubation of Fe 3 S 4 ferredoxin with Zn 2+ or Ni 2+ yields the mixed-metal clusters [ZnFe 3 S 4 ] + and [NiFe 3 S 4 ] + . Here we report asystematic Mossbauer study of [Fe 3 S 4 ] 0 , [ZnFe 3 S 4 ] + , [NiFe 3 S 4 ] + , and [NiFe 3 S 4 ] + complexed with CN - .
