The pineal hormone melatonin regulates daily and seasonal rhythms, at least in part through an action on the mammalian biological clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Melatonin was tested in vitro (10(-15)-10(-6) M; ZT9.5-10.5) for its effect on the circadian peak in neuronal firing rate in the rat SCN slice. It produced a concentration-related phase advance (maximum advance = 3 +/- 0.3 h at 10(-9) M, n = 3; minimum effective concentration = 10(-13) M; EC50 = 1.2 x 10(-12) M). The… CONTINUE READING
