Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is associated with depression. We investigated the effect of various types of antidepressant agents in vitro on the function of glucocorticoid receptor (GR). Desipramine, clomiplamine, fluoxetine, milnacipran and clorgyline all induced rapid and sustained translocation of GR into the nucleus of human lymphocytes.
