G protein-coupled opioid receptors undergo desensitization after prolonged agonist exposure. Recent in vitro studies of mu-opioid receptor (MOR) signaling revealed an involvement of phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3K) in agonist-induced MOR desensitization.
