THE spontaneous activity of many cells in the visual cortex of the cat is influenced by electrical stimulation of the labyrinth and by caloric stimulation1–3. The functional significance of this vestibular input to the visual pathways is not known. We present here a preliminary account of observations which might provide a role for this input.
