Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunocytochemistry was used to monitor the response of astrocytes in the rat spinal cord to either dorsal root or sciatic nerve lesions. Image analysis methods were used to provide a quantitative correlate of the reactive gliosis.
