I must begin by thanking the organisers of this event for inviting me to speak at the School of Oriental and African Studies. It is indeed a great honour for me, especially when I think of the several generations of educated Indians in the last century and a half who have looked upon this university and this city as the fountainhead of modernity and their gateway to a new world of enlightenment and prosperity in their
