Shorter lead times and lower inventories have become major goals in the operation of contemporary manufacturing systems. In the past, inventories were used to decouple adjacent stages of production and to provide some autonomy to individual stages of the process. The longer lead times that resulted were not viewed as a disadvantage in traditional markets.
