Hyperalgesia and allodynia are frequent symptoms of disease and may be useful adaptations to protect vulnerable tissues. Both may, however, also emerge as diseases in their own right. Considerable progress has been made in developing clinically relevant animal models for identifying the most significant underlying mechanisms. This review deals with experimental models that are currently used to measure (sect. II) or to induce (sect. III) hyperalgesia and allodynia in animals. Induction and…

Effect of autophagy on allodynia, hyperalgesia and astrocyte activation in a rat model of neuropathic pain
TLDR
It is indicated that neuropathic pain activates autophagy, which alleviates mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia and suppresses astrocyte activity, and appears to be mediated via the Autophagy-lysosomal pathway.
EFFECT OF ACAMPROSATE IN EXPERIMENTAL MODELS OF PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHIC AND INFLAMMATORY PAIN IN WISTAR RATS
TLDR
Single dose treatment with acamprosate did not produce significant anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperalgesic effects, in carrageenan-induced inflammatory pain model and, repeated administration of acampsrosate ameliorates the behavioural symptoms of neuropathic pain observed.
Anti-hyperalgesic and anti-allodynic activities of capillarisin via suppression of inflammatory signaling in animal model.
Painful to describe, painful to diagnose: opioid-induced hyperalgesia.
TLDR
OIH is described to be ‘characterized by a paradoxical increase in pain associated with allodynia and hyperalgesia’, the clearest and most comprehensive description of OIH to date to date in the accompanying issue of Continuing Education in Anaesthesia, Critical Care & Pain of the British Journal of Anaesthesia.
A bacosides containing Bacopa monnieri extract alleviates allodynia and hyperalgesia in the chronic constriction injury model of neuropathic pain in rats
TLDR
The findings suggest that Bacopa monnieri can be used as adjuvant therapy for neuropathic pain conditions afflicted with allodynia and hyperalgesia and counterbalanced the CCI-induced aberrations in the nociceptive behaviors.
Assessment of Morphine-induced Hyperalgesia and Analgesic Tolerance in Mice Using Thermal and Mechanical Nociceptive Modalities
TLDR
A methodological approach for inducing, recording and quantifying morphine-induced hyperalgesia as well as for evidencing analgesic tolerance, using the tail-immersion and tail pressure tests in wild-type mice, and provides a model system to investigate the effectiveness of potential therapeutic agents to improve opiate analgesic efficacy.
The effects of dexmedetomidine alone and in combination with tramadol or amitriptyline in a neuropathic pain model.
TLDR
The combination of these drugs appears to be more effective in increasing the pain threshold after peripheral nerve injury, when compared with the administration of either of amitriptyline or tramadol alone and should be considered as a possible alternative to decrease side effects of individual drug therapy.

TLDR
Data suggest a prominent role for the RVM in mediating the sensitization of spinal neurons and development of secondary hyperalgesia, and results to date suggest that peripheral injury and persistent input engage spinobulbospinal mechanisms that may be the prepotent contributors to central sensitization and development.
Experimental evidence on the nature of cutaneous hyperalgesia.
TLDR
Cutaneous hyperalgesia occurring in undamaged tissues adjacent to and at some distance from the site of an injury or a site of noxious stimulation is concerned.

Inhibition of Microglial Activation Attenuates the Development but Not Existing Hypersensitivity in a Rat Model of Neuropathy
TLDR
It is demonstrated that inhibition of microglial activation attenuated the development of behavioral hypersensitivity in a rat model of neuropathic pain but had no effect on the treatment of existing mechanical allodynia and hyperalgesia.
A Genetic Analysis of Opioid-induced Hyperalgesia in Mice
TLDR
Genetic variants of the β2-AR gene seem to explain some part of the differences between various strains of mice to develop OIH, a syndrome of increased sensitivity to noxious stimuli seen after both the acute and chronic administration of opioids.
