Abstract The title problem was discussed from a viewpoint of continuum damage mechanics. By assuming that both the plastic and the creep damages are governed by the formation and the growth of the grain boundary cavities, the states of plastic and creep damages caused by these cavities were first represented in terms of a symmetric second-rank damage tensor.
