Computational modelling studies of the structure of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer membranes consistently exhibit a nanoscopic phase-separated morphology in which the ionic side chains and aqueous counterions segregate from the fluorocarbon backbone to form clusters or channels.
