Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas emitted during biological wastewater treatment. A pseudo-mechanistic model describing three biological pathways for nitric oxide (NO) and N2O production was calibrated for mixed culture biomass from an activated sludge process using laboratory-scale experiments. The model (NDHA) comprehensively describes N2O producing pathways by both autotrophic ammonium oxidizing bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria. Extant respirometric assays and anaerobic batch… Expand

A consilience model to describe N2O production during biological N removal
Nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas, is produced during biological nitrogen conversion in wastewater treatment operations. Complex mechanisms underlie N2O production by autotrophic andExpand
Release of nitric and nitrous oxides from denitrifying activated sludge
Abstract Activated sludge was examined in a continuously stripped batch reactor and in closed serum bottles for the production of the volatile denitrification intermediates nitric oxide (NO) andExpand
Effect of carbon source and competition for electrons on nitrous oxide reduction in a mixed denitrifying microbial community
Abstract The competition for electrons has been recently demonstrated to affect the reduction rates of the nitrogen oxides in a methanol enriched denitrifying community. The aim of this study was toExpand
Storage and growth of denitrifiers in aerobic granules: Part II. model calibration and verification
The model is successfully calibrated and a set of stoichiometric and kinetic parameters for the anoxic storage and growth of the denitrifiers are obtained and the present model is appropriate to simulate and predict the performance of a granule‐based denitrification system. Expand
Two-Phase Decay of Aerobic Sludge Shown by Online Fluorescence and Modeled with Interaction of Heterotrophs and Nitrifiers
Both heterotrophs and autotrophic nitrifiers are present in aerobic sludge digestion systems. The endogenous heterotrophic metabolism releases ammonium that, via oxidation to nitrite and nitrate,Expand

Respirometric tests confirmed that ATU addition has a significant effect on activity and respiration rate of activated sludge samples and could affect results of respirometric analyses. Expand
N(2)O production during nitrogen removal via nitrite from domestic wastewater: main sources and control method.
N(2)O production during nitrogen removal via nitrite decreased about 50% by applying the step-feed SBR, due to the effective control of nitrite and ammonia, the precursors of N(2]O production. Expand
Uncertainty analysis in WWTP model applications: a critical discussion using an example from design.
This study focuses on uncertainty analysis of WWTP models and analyzes the issue of framing and how it affects the interpretation of uncertainty analysis results, demonstrating that depending on the way the uncertainty analysis is framed, the estimated uncertainty of design performance criteria differs significantly. Practical identifiability analysis of large environmental simulation models
Large environmental simulation models are usually overparameterized with respect to given sets of observations. This results in poorly identifiable or nonidentifiable model parameters. For smallExpand
