The paper considers fragmentation process of high-explosive projectile casings, i.e. rapidly expanding cylinders loaded by extreme internal pressure generated by detonation of explosives. The classical, physically based, Mott model of the ring fragmentation is examined and the adequate computer program is realized. The fragment size (or mass) distribution is analyzed and the average fragment size is related to the characteristics of expansion and the casing material properties. The influence of…

The destruction of thick-walled cylindrical shells under explosive loading is a typical example of a problem that cannot be solved without taking into account the heterogeneity of the material’s

Axial distribution of fragments from the dynamic explosion fragmentation of metal shells

Modeling the dynamic fracture and fragmentation of explosive-driven metal ring with notches or grooves

The dynamic fracture and fragmentation of notched rings under explosive loading were modeled to investigate the fragment characteristics (average fragment size and fragment size distribution) and

Modeling the dynamic fracture and fragmentation of explosive-driven metal ring with notches or grooves

Fragment Size Distribution in Dynamic Fragmentation: Geometric Probability Approach

It has been concluded that preferred theoretical model depends on dimensionality of fragmentation process.

Exploring the Physics behind Dynamic Fragmentation through Parallel Simulations

The physical mechanisms underlying the dynamic fragmentation of heterogeneous brittle materials are explored through numerical simulations. The use of computational facilities, rather than

In many fracture problems, fragmentation is essentially a probabilistic process, which is determined by the stochastic nature of the distribution of inhomogeneities of the internal structure of

Natural Fragmentation Behavior of Steel Cylinders with Variable Charge Geometries under Detonation Loading

Natural fragmentation of steel cylinders with different charge sizes is investigated, and the correlation of different cylinders is proposed. The Mott fragment distribution has some obvious

Fragmentation of metal rings by electromagnetic loading

A method is described for performing fragmentation studies on rapidly expanding metal rings. A fast-discharge capacitor system generates magnetic forces which accelerate the rings to maximum radial

Fragmentation of solids under impulsive stress loading

An analysis of fragmentation due to dynamic stress loading is presented which provides analytic functions for the distributions in fragment sizes. The analysis is restricted to one-dimensional bodies

An expression is given for the length of the average fragment, which is shown to depend on the radius and velocity of the case at the moment of break-up, and on the mechanical properties of the metal.

The Initial Velocities of Fragments from Bombs, Shell and Grenades,

Abstract : To assess the efficiency of a projectile, it is often required to predict the initial velocities of the fragments from a knowledge of the dimensions of the metal casing and the character

Probability Formulas for Describing Fragment Size Distributions

Abstract : Mott's distribution has long been used to describe fragment populations which result from the detonation of shells filled with high explosive. This distribution is a special case of more

Application of the Gilvarry Distribution to the Statistical Description of Fragmentation of Solids under Dynamic Loading

It is shown that the Gilvarry distribution offers a good description of cumulative distributions of the number and volume (mass) of fragments as functions of the linear size, area, or mass of the

Geometric statistics and dynamic fragmentation

The present study is focused on the distributions in particle size produced in dynamic fragmentation processes. Previous work on this subject is reviewed. We then examine the one‐dimensional
