Abstract This paper describes a mechanistic model for long-term flux decline in protein ultrafiltration. The model assumes that protein in the concentrated layer adjacent to the membrane slowly aggregates to form a deposit of reduced voidage and increasing resistance. Protein aggregation is based on flocculation theory and assumes that the protein molecules behave as 'hard spheres' with double-layer interactions given by DLVO theory.
