AbstractVertical slot fishways are a type of fish pass of wide operating range that allow fish to move across obstacles in rivers. This study aims to model the performance of these structures, under uniform and nonuniform flow conditions, using discharge coefficients involving the downstream water level together with a logical algorithm. This will allow an explanation of the hydraulic behavior of this type of fishway under tailwater levels and flow variations on rivers. Two vertical slot…

Influence of Inflow and Outflow Boundary Conditions on Flow Situation in Vertical Slot Fishways

Fishways are of importance for stabilization and regeneration of fish populations. Since most waterways and rivers are anthropogenic modified—e.g., to make them navigable or to produce energy,

Relationship between Upstream Swimming Behaviors of Juvenile Grass Carp and Characteristic Hydraulic Conditions of a Vertical Slot Fishway

The successful fish upstream movement through a dam/gate is closely associated with the hydraulic conditions of a fishway. To improve the passage efficiency, this study investigated the upstream

Turning Pools in Stepped Fishways: Biological Assessment via Fish Response and CFD Models

With the aim of building more compact fishways and adapting them to field conditions to improve their location by fish, it is common to use turning pools, reducing the longitudinal development of the

Multislot Fishway Improves Entrance Performance and Fish Transit Time over Vertical Slots

Pool-type fishways have been increasingly tested to improve fish passage performance and minimize migration delays. Designing cost-effective fishways is essential for a trade-off between water uses

Fishways are hydraulic structures designed to dissipate the energy of flowing water in order to decrease water velocities and increase water depths. The history of fishways is long, the first written

Experimental Approach to the Hydraulics of Vertical Slot Fishways

The performance of two particular designs of vertical slot fishways for two different slopes was studied in a wide range of discharges. Water depths were measured in almost the whole surface of

Contribution of experimental fluid mechanics to the design of vertical slot fish passes

This paper presents the main results of an experimental study of mean and turbulent characteristics of flow in a scale model of a vertical slot fish pass with varying width and slope (from 5% to

Hydraulics of Vertical Slot Fishways

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the hydraulics of vertical slot fishways. Seven designs, including some conventional designs, were tested. A conceptual uniform flow state

Structure of Flow in Vertical Slot Fishway

This pape presents the results of an experimental study of the structure of flow in a vertical slot fishway of an effective and simple design. The flow at the slot could be treated as a plane jet,

Detailed experimental study of hydrodynamic turbulent flows generated in vertical slot fishways

The kinematics of hydrodynamic turbulent flows developed in vertical slot fishways (VSF) was studied in detail in flow patterns not yet published to date for the purposes of modifying existing

New designs for vertical slot fishways

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on 18 designs of vertical slot fishways. Based on these results, it appears that a width of 8b0 and a length of 10b0 for the pools, where b0

Mean Flow and Turbulence Structure in Vertical Slot Fishways

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the mean and turbulence structures of flow in a vertical slot fishway with slopes of 5.06 and 10.52%. Two flow patterns existed in the
