Modafinil, a novel stimulant which has several remarkable features that distinguish it from other stimulants, has been developed by Lafon, a French pharmaceutical company. Unlike the amphetamines, for example, modafinil is reported to have minimal peripheral side effects at therapeutic doses. It also appears to have a low abuse potential, does not interfere with normal sleep, and does not seem to produce tolerance. It improves vigilance especially in sleep-deprived subjects. It has been used…

Effects of modafinil on cognitive and meta‐cognitive performance
TLDR
The generality of modafinil‐induced overconfidence is investigated and the need for continued research on the many complex interactions involving fatigue states, occasional versus long‐term stimulant use, and subjective assessments of fatigue and cognitive performance is highlighted.
Modafinil Elicits Sympathomedullary Activation
TLDR
Modafinil substantially perturbs autonomic cardiovascular regulation by increase in heart rate and blood pressure and should be considered with caution in use of modafInil in patients with cardiovascular disease.
Modafinil treatment for fatigue associated with fibromyalgia.
TLDR
A retrospective chart review of 98 patients who have fibromyalgia, were being treated by a rheumatologist and 2 nurse practitioners in a private practice setting, and had been given a prescription for modafinil found a majority of patients to be involved in both polypharmacy regimens and nonpharmacologic treatment (i.e., biofeedback) as well.
Modafinil induces wakefulness without intensifying motor activity or subsequent rebound hypersomnolence in the rat.

TLDR
Both rebound hypersomnolence and increased LMA intensity, which are undesirable features in wake-promoting drugs, were not observed after modafinil treatment, and thus further differentiated modaf inil from amphetamine-like stimulants.
Modafinil and cocaine: a double-blind, placebo-controlled drug interaction study.
Effects of acute modafinil ingestion on exercise time to exhaustion.
TLDR
The RPE results suggest that the dampening of the sensation of fatigue was likely a factor responsible for the enhanced performance of modafinil during high-intensity exercise.

Sleep-deprived individuals appear to have decreased psychological and physical capabilities. Studies have shown how major psychological aspects, such as alertness, complex mental performance, and
Modafinil, d‐amphetamine and placebo during 64 hours of sustained mental work. I. Effects on mood, fatigue, cognitive performance and body temperature
TLDR
Modafinil appears to be a good alternative to amphetamine for counteracting the debilitating mood and cognitive effects of sleep loss during sustained operations.
Naps and modafinil as countermeasures for the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance.
TLDR
The combination of naps and modafinil demonstrated the best cognitive performance during sleep deprivation, and naps should be encouraged, even if limited and diurnal.

EFFECT OF MODAFINIL ON PANCREATIC EXOCRINE SECRETION IN RATS. A COMPARISON WITH ADRAFINIL AND RELATED DRUGS
TLDR
The effects of modafinil and adrafinil were different from those of sympathetic amines and dopamine: they did not stimulate the output of bicarbonate in anaesthetized rats, and pancreatic inhibition observed in conscious rats was not inhibited by either yohimbine or prazosin.
