Modafinil: the unique properties of a new stimulant.
@article{Lyons1991ModafinilTU, title={Modafinil: the unique properties of a new stimulant.}, author={Terence J. Lyons and Jonathan French}, journal={Aviation, space, and environmental medicine}, year={1991}, volume={62 5}, pages={ 432-5 } }
Modafinil, a novel stimulant which has several remarkable features that distinguish it from other stimulants, has been developed by Lafon, a French pharmaceutical company. Unlike the amphetamines, for example, modafinil is reported to have minimal peripheral side effects at therapeutic doses. It also appears to have a low abuse potential, does not interfere with normal sleep, and does not seem to produce tolerance. It improves vigilance especially in sleep-deprived subjects. It has been used…

The generality of modafinil‐induced overconfidence is investigated and the need for continued research on the many complex interactions involving fatigue states, occasional versus long‐term stimulant use, and subjective assessments of fatigue and cognitive performance is highlighted.

A retrospective chart review of 98 patients who have fibromyalgia, were being treated by a rheumatologist and 2 nurse practitioners in a private practice setting, and had been given a prescription for modafinil found a majority of patients to be involved in both polypharmacy regimens and nonpharmacologic treatment (i.e., biofeedback) as well.
Modafinil induces wakefulness without intensifying motor activity or subsequent rebound hypersomnolence in the rat.

Both rebound hypersomnolence and increased LMA intensity, which are undesirable features in wake-promoting drugs, were not observed after modafinil treatment, and thus further differentiated modaf inil from amphetamine-like stimulants.

The effects of modafinil and adrafinil were different from those of sympathetic amines and dopamine: they did not stimulate the output of bicarbonate in anaesthetized rats, and pancreatic inhibition observed in conscious rats was not inhibited by either yohimbine or prazosin.
