Abstract The mobility and plant availability of radioactive Cs from the Chernobyl accident in natural soil-plant systems of varying fertility were studied at three sampling locations situated in subalpine areas of central Norway. The soil samples included litter, humus (0–2 cm and 2–5 cm depth), and mineral soil (8–12 cm and 20–30 cm depth), and the plant species studied were Betula nana, Empetrum hermaphroditum and Juncus trifidus .
