There is accumulating evidence that cell survival and energy metabolism are inexorably linked. As a major mediator of both the metabolic and anti-apoptotic effects of growth factors, the serine/threonine kinase Akt (also known as protein kinase B or PKB) is particularly well-suited to coordinate the regulation of these interrelated processes.
