Mitochondrial Ca²⁺ uptake exerts dual effects on mitochondria. Ca²⁺ accumulation in the mitochondrial matrix dissipates membrane potential (ΔΨm), but Ca²⁺ binding of the intramitochondrial enzymes accelerates oxidative phosphorylation, leading to mitochondrial hyperpolarization.
