The current standard of care for patients infected with HIV includes plasma viral load tests to monitor the effectiveness of antiretroviral regimens (1, 2). The assays approved for this use detect cell-free plasma viral RNA by using various amplification techniques (2). Access to these sensitive techniques and the trend toward earlier and more aggressive treatment approaches have led to the use of these assays as primary tools for the diagnosis of acute HIV infection (3, 4).
