We study a class of non-geometric string vacua realized as completely soluble superconformal field theory (SCFT). These models are defined as `interpolating orbifolds' of K3 × S1 by the mirror transformation acting on the K3 fiber combined with the half-shift on the S1-base. They are variants of the T-folds, the interpolating orbifolds by T-duality transformations, and thus may be called `mirrorfolds'. Starting with arbitrary (compact or non-compact) Gepner models for the K3 fiber, we construct…

Non-geometric Calabi-Yau backgrounds and K3 automorphisms

A bstractWe consider compactifications of type IIA superstring theory on mirror-folds obtained as K3 fibrations over two-tori with non-geometric monodromies involving mirror symmetries. At special

= 4 gauged supergravity from duality-twist compactifications of string theory

We investigate the lifting of half-maximal four-dimensional gauged supergravities to compactifications of string theory. It is shown that a class of such supergravities can arise from

Non-geometric backgrounds based on topological interfaces

A bstractWe study simple models of the world-sheet CFTs describing non-geometric backgrounds based on the topological interfaces, the ‘gluing condition’ of which imposes T-duality- or analogous

Lie algebra lattices and strings on T-folds

A bstractWe study the world-sheet conformal field theories for T-folds systematically based on the Lie algebra lattices representing the momenta of strings. The fixed point condition required for the

Non-supersymmetric asymmetric orbifolds with vanishing cosmological constant

A bstractWe study type II string vacua defined by torus compactifications accompanied by T-duality twists. We realize the string vacua, specifically, by means of the asymmetric orbifolding associated

Localized Modes in Type II and Heterotic Singular Calabi-Yau Conformal Field Theories

We consider type II and heterotic string compactifications on an isolated singularity in the noncompact Gepner model approach. The conifold-type ADE noncompact Calabi-Yau threefolds, as well as the

Flux compactifications, twisted tori and doubled geometry

In [1] an O(D,D)-covariant sigma model describing the embedding of a closed world-sheet into the 2D-dimensional twisted torus was proposed. Such sigma models provide a universal description of string

More on non-supersymmetric asymmetric orbifolds with vanishing cosmological constant

A bstractWe explore various non-supersymmetric type II string vacua constructed based on asymmetric orbifolds of tori with vanishing cosmological constant at the one loop. The string vacua we present

The geometry, branes and applications of exceptional field theory

This is a review of exceptional field theory: a generalisation of Kaluza-Klein theory that unifies the metric and $p$-form gauge field degrees of freedom of supergravity into a generalised or

Generalised T-duality and non-geometric backgrounds

We undertake a systematic analysis of non-geometric backgrounds in string theory by seeking stringy liftings of a class of gauged supergravity theories. In addition to conventional flux

Flux compactifications of M-theory on twisted tori

We find the bosonic sector of the gauged supergravities that are obtained from 11-dimensional supergravity by Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction with flux to any dimension D. We show that, if

Worldsheet CFTs for Flat Monodrofolds

We resolve a puzzle in the theory of strings propagating on locally flat spacetimes with nontrivial Wilson lines for stringy Z_N gauge symmetries. We find that strings probing such backgrounds are

Twisting K3 × T2 orbifolds

We construct a class of geometric twists of Calabi-Yau manifolds of Voisin-Borcea type (K3 × T2)/2 and study the superpotential in a type IIA orientifold based on this geometry. The twists modify the

Modular invariant critical superstrings on four-dimensional Minkowski space times two-dimensional black hole

Extending the seminal work of Bilal and Gervais, we construct a tachyon-free, modular invariant partition function for critical superstrings on four-dimensional Minkowski × two-dimensional black

A geometry for non-geometric string backgrounds

A geometric string solution has background fields in overlapping coordinate patches related by diffeomorphisms and gauge transformations, while for a non-geometric background this is generalised to
