Complex neural circuits exist in the hypothalamus for the control of metabolic hormones, enzyme activities, and substrate flux that appear to be involved with the normal adaptation to feeding and subsequent blood sugar regulation. Abnormalities within this system have been found in experimental obesity and in human diabetes, and such maladaptive changes are thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of both disorders.
