The highly sparse nature of propagation channels and the restricted use of radio frequency (RF) chains at transceivers limit the performance of millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple- output (MIMO) systems. Introducing reconfigurable antennas to mmWave can offer an additional degree of freedom on designing mmWave MIMO systems. This paper provides a theoretical framework for studying the mmWave MIMO with reconfigurable antennas. We present an architecture of reconfigurable mmWave MIMO… Expand

Secure Communication for Spatially Sparse Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Channels via Hybrid Precoding
It is shown that the channel sparsity plays a fundamental role analogous to secret keys in achieving secure communication by exploiting the spatial sparsity of legitimate user’s channel and revealed that sparsity in the power domain can always contribute to the secrecy rate. Expand

Maximizing MIMO Capacity in Sparse Multipath With Reconfigurable Antenna Arrays
A model for sparse multipath channels is proposed and it is shown that sparse channels afford a new dimension over which capacity can be optimized: the distribution or configuration of the sparse statistically independent degrees of freedom (DoF) in the available spatial signal space dimensions. High rate space-time codes for millimeter-wave systems with reconfigurable antennas
This paper proposes a high-rate space-time block code (STBC) for millimeter-wave wireless communication systems that are equipped with reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas that achieves a coding rate of two and requires a low-complexity maximum likelihood (ML) detector. Expand
A reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output communication system
The theoretical findings show that under certain channel propagation conditions and using an appropriate codification and power allocation of the transmitted signal, the diversity order of the proposed reconfigurable MIMO system is given by the product of transmit and receive antennas as well as the number of reconfigured radiation states of the receive antennas.
