The majority of combat-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) within the U.S. Armed Forces is mild TBI (mTBI). This article focuses specifically on the screening, diagnosis, and treatment aspects of mTBI within the military community. Aggressive screening measures were instituted in 2006 to ensure that the mTBI population is identified and treated. Screenings occur in-theater, outside the contiguous United States, and in-garrison. We discuss specific screening procedures at each screening setting…
Correspondence of the Boston Assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury-Lifetime and In-Theater Department of Defense Medical Records
TLDR
Investigation of the correspondence of the Boston Assessment of TBI-Lifetime diagnostic prevalence and injury severity of traumatic brain injury with in-theater medical records from Department of Defense suggests changes at both individual-level and system-level are needed to adequately diagnose and document all TBI during deployment.
Mild TBI/Concussion Clinical Tools for Providers Used Within the Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency.
TLDR
Clinical tools for screening, evaluating, and diagnosing concussion used within the US Department of Defense are showcased and resources for practitioners to find these clinical tools online are provided.
Prognosis and Diagnostic Biomarkers of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Current Status and Future Prospects.
TLDR
The role of biomarkers as potential key factors in diagnosing mTBI is discussed, with a focus on protein based peripheral and CNS markers, genetic biomarkers, imaging biomarker, and neurophysiological biomarkers.
The Veterans Health Administration's traumatic brain injury clinical reminder screen and evaluation: Practice patterns.
TLDR
Clinical practice patterns associated with the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) Comprehensive Traumatic Brain Injury Evaluation (CTBIE) and whether practice patterns vary by patient, provider, or facility characteristics are described.
Co-Occurring Traumatic Brain Injury, PTSD Symptoms, and Alcohol Use in Veterans
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been identified as a significant health problem among veterans. Recent research demonstrates the potential interaction and magnification of symptoms of posttraumatic…
Application of Blood-Based Biomarkers in Human Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
TLDR
A number of current experimental peripheral blood biomarkers of mTBI are highlighted to highlight their clinical application and utility, as well as comment on the issues surrounding their clinical applications and utility.
The investigation of four technologies to assist in detecting mild to moderate traumatic brain injury of U.S. Military service members.
TLDR
This study demonstrated the usefulness of a force platform and a self-reported mood scale for predicting presence of mild to moderate TBI.
Neuroimaging in Traumatic Brain Injury
TLDR
Neuroimaging plays an important role in the initial diagnosis, clinical management, and prognosis of patients with traumatic brain injury and in more chronic phases of recovery, imaging may also be used to characterize and monitor late-appearing tissue changes.
Effectiveness of Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy for U.S. Veterans With a History of Traumatic Brain Injury.
TLDR
It is suggested that TBI status should not preclude individuals from being offered trauma-focused PTSD treatment, and veterans who completed PE showed greater symptom reduction than those who completed CPT.

Mild traumatic brain injury literature review and proposed changes to classification.
TLDR
A new classification for TBI is proposed that addresses acute, sub-acute, and chronic phases, and includes neurocognitive, somatic, and psychological symptom presentation and is comprehensively reviewed over the past 20 years.
Traumatic Brain Injury Screening: Preliminary Findings in a US Army Brigade Combat Team
TLDR
Those with TBI were significantly more likely to recall somatic and/or neuropsychiatric symptoms immediately postinjury and endorse symptoms at follow-up than were soldiers without a history of deployment-related TBI.
Proceedings of the military mTBI Diagnostics Workshop, St. Pete Beach, August 2010.
TLDR
ThemTBI Diagnostics Workshop was designed as a forum where civilian and military experts from a variety of TBI-related clinical and basic science disciplines could meet to define the diagnostic tools, alone or in combination, that were most likely to result in an acute, objective diagnosis of mTBI.
Comparison of Concussive Symptoms, Cognitive Performance, and Psychological Symptoms Between Acute Blast-Versus Nonblast-Induced Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
TLDR
Results suggest that there are few differences in concussive symptoms, psychological symptoms, and neurocognitive performance between blast and nonblast mTBIs, although clinically significant impairment in cognitive reaction time for both blast andnonblast groups is observed.
Symptoms in military service members after blast mTBI with and without associated injuries.
TLDR
Results suggest that in the presence of an invisible injury, such as mTBI, associated bodily injuries may be at least partially protective against the development of stress and neurobehavioral symptoms.
