This article identifies and reviews three historical phases of research and development on microteaching and the technical skills of teaching. Development of concepts at Stanford University from the early 1960s is traced, with the focus on the need for further research on the validity of technical skills and on possible research paradigms which would permit more useful research efforts to be planned.
