ABSTRACT Micropolar continua are shown to be the generalisation of nematic liquid crystals through perspectives of order parameters, topological and geometrical considerations. Micropolar continua and nematic liquid crystals are recognised as antipodals of and in projective geometry. We show that position-dependent rotational axial fields in kinematic micropolar continua can be considered as solutions of anisotropic Higgs fields, characterised by integers N. We emphasise that the identical…

Topological point defects in nematic liquid crystals

Point defects in nematics, also called hedgehogs, are topological entities that have no equivalent in ordered atomic solids, despite the homonymy. They have been the subject of intense experimental

Disclination Loops, Hedgehogs, and All That

The homotopy theory of topological defects is a powerful tool for organizing and unifying many ideas across a broad range of physical systems. Recently, experimental progress has been made in

The topology of non-uniform media in condensed matter physics

Abstract Methods of algebraic topology have been employed recently to classify defects and non-singular textures of condensed matter systems, and to describe two-defect processes. In this article a

Elie Cartan's torsion in geometry and in field theory, an essay

We review the application of torsion in field theory. First we show how the notion of torsion emerges in differential geometry. In the context of a Cartan circuit, torsion is related to translations

Defects in liquid crystals: homotopy theory and experimental studies

The fundamental concepts of the homotopy theory of defects in liquid crystals and the results of experimental studies in this field are presented. The concepts of degeneracy space, homotopy groups,

Defects in liquid crystals

Defects are local breakings of symmetry in an ordered medium. The physics of defects has long been reduced to the study of dislocations in solids, and to the main physical phenomena they are

Compatibility conditions of continua using Riemann–Cartan geometry

The compatibility conditions for generalised continua are studied in the framework of differential geometry, in particular Riemann–Cartan geometry. We show that Vallée’s compatibility condition in
