The activated sludge process relies on the formation of strong microbial flocs. The knowledge about dominant floc-forming bacteria is at present very limited, especially from a phylogenetic perspective. In this study, numerous microcolonies in the activated sludge flocs were found to be targeted by a Betaproteobacteria-group-specific oligonucleotide probe using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Some of these were micromanipulated and further identified by reverse transcriptase…

Identity, abundance and physiology of Aquaspirillum-related filamentous bacteria in activated sludge.
Microcolony-forming bacteria closely related to the genus Aquaspirillum in the Betaproteobacteria were recently observed to be abundant in many nutrient removal wastewater treatment plants. The
Ecophysiologyofabundantdenitrifying bacteria inactivated sludge
TLDR
The coexistence of Aquaspirillum, Azoarcus and Thauera-related bacteria in a range of treatment plants with differences in wastewater, design and operation suggest that the populations ensure a functional stability of the plants by occupying different ecological niches related to the carbon transformation.

Eikelboom's morphotype 0803 in activated sludge belongs to the genus Caldilinea in the phylum Chloroflexi.
TLDR
Micromanipulated filamentous bacteria from bulking and foaming activated sludge morphologically identified as Eikelboom type 0803 were shown to be affiliated to the genus Caldilinea within the phylum Chloroflexi, indicating an important structural role in the sludge floc formation.
Extracellular DNA is abundant and important for microcolony strength in mixed microbial biofilms.
TLDR
DNase digestion ofactivated sludge led to general floc disintegration and disruption of the microcolonies with high eDNA content, implying that eDNA was an important structural component in activated sludge biofilms.
Identification and Ecophysiological Characterization of Epiphytic Protein-Hydrolyzing Saprospiraceae (“Candidatus Epiflobacter” spp.) in Activated Sludge
TLDR
A new genus, “Candidatus Epiflobacter,” is proposed for this epiphytic group in activated-sludge treatment plants, where it presumably plays an important role in protein degradation.
Microautoradiographic Study of Rhodocyclus-Related Polyphosphate-Accumulating Bacteria in Full-Scale Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Plants
TLDR
The Rhodocyclus-related PAO were able to denitrify and thus played a role in the denitrification occurring in full-scale EBPR plants, and were ableto take up orthophosphate and accumulate polyphosphate when oxygen, nitrate, or nitrite was present as an electron acceptor.
In situ detection of protein-hydrolysing microorganisms in activated sludge.
TLDR
Fluorescence in situ enzyme staining with casein and bovine serum albumin conjugated with BODIPY dye was applied and optimized to label PHOs in activated sludge plants, and a strong fluorescent labeling of the surface of microorganisms expressing protease activity was achieved.
Substrate-dependent denitrification of abundant probe-defined denitrifying bacteria in activated sludge.
TLDR
Activated sludge denitrification was potentially conducted by a diverse, versatile population including not only Betaproteobacteria (Aquaspirillum, Thauera, Accumulibacter, and Azoarcus) but also some Alphaproteoobacteria and Gammaproteinobacteria, as indicated by the assimilation of 14CO2 by these probe-defined groups.
Identification of active denitrifiers in full-scale nutrient removal wastewater treatment systems.
TLDR
Stable-isotope probing was applied in combination with microautoradiography-fluorescence in situ hybridization to identify previously unrecognized active denitrifying phylotypes in a full-scale WWTP with biological N and P removal.

Studies on the in situ physiology of Thiothrix spp. present in activated sludge.
TLDR
The key properties that Thiothrix might be employing to outcompete other microorganisms in activated sludge were probably related to the mixotrophic growth potential with strong stimulation of acetate uptake by thiosulphate, as well as stimulation of bicarbonate incorporation by acetate in the presence of thiosULphate.

TLDR
Different functional groups of bacteria in activated sludge from a Danish municipal wastewater treatment plant were investigated and quantified on the basis of their ability to take up acetate under different electron acceptor conditions, indicating that the alternating aerobic and anoxic conditions in the wastewater Treatment plant investigated favoured the presence of facultative aerobic and denitrifying heterotrophic bacteria.
Meganema perideroedes gen. nov., sp. nov., a filamentous alphaproteobacterium from activated sludge.
TLDR
It is proposed that the isolates from the sludge at Grindsted represent a new genus and species, Meganema perideroedes, and they were phenotypically different from their closest relatives and from all hitherto known filamentous bacteria described.
Members of the Family Comamonadaceae as Primary Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate-co-3-Hydroxyvalerate)-Degrading Denitrifiers in Activated Sludge as Revealed by a Polyphasic Approach
TLDR
The results of the polyphasic approach indicate that β-Proteobacteria, especially members of the family Comamonadaceae, are primary PHBV-degrading denitrifiers in activated sludge.
Microbial diversity in an in situ reactor system treating monochlorobenzene contaminated groundwater as revealed by 16S ribosomal DNA analysis.
TLDR
The results suggest that the different environments were inhabited by distinct microbial communities in respect to their taxonomic diversity, particular pronounced between sediment attached microbial communities from the reactor samples and free-living bacteria from the groundwater in- and outflow.

TLDR
The results clearly demonstrate that "Nostocoida limicola"-like filaments from industrial WWTPs are different from all other "nostocoids" types investigated so far, and are affiliated to the alpha-subclass of Proteobacteria.
Comamonas denitrificans sp. nov., an efficient denitrifying bacterium isolated from activated sludge.
TLDR
To find a biomarker for denitrification in activated sludge, five denitrifying strains isolated from three wastewater treatment plants were studied and phylogenetic analysis revealed that these strains are positioned among members of the genus Comamonas in the beta-subclass of the Proteobacteria.
