  • destructiveness of microorganisms which degrade cellulose, their control by chemicals, and the resistance of chemically modified cellulose to these agents has been obtained through this systematic inquiry. But no panacea against ultimate deterioration has been discovered. The more recent knowledge has been applied by manufacturers of textiles and finishes, and as a consequence the service life of these materials has been lengthened.
