The dehydrogenase technique for measuring the metabolic activity of microorganisms in soil was modified to use a 6-h, 37 degrees C incubation with either glucose of yeast extract as the electron-donating substrate. The rate of formazan production remained constant during this time interval, and cellular multiplication apparently did not occur.
