Michael Ashburner was born in Brighton, on the south coast of England and spent the first 10 years of his life living high on the South Downs. He then was moved to the Home Counties, and went to high school in High Wycombe. He was an undergraduate in Cambridge and has never really left, doing his PhD in the Department of Genetics (1968) and then rising through the ranks of the faculty until, in 1991, he was appointed Professor of Biology.
