MgI Emission in the Night Sky Spectrum

title={MgI Emission in the Night Sky Spectrum},
  author={Thomas R. Hicks and B. H. May and Newrick K. Reay},
DURING September, October 1971 and April 1972 we observed a narrow region of the night sky spectrum in the vicinity of the 5183.62 Å MgI wavelength. Measurements were made with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer1,2 from the observatory at Izaña on Tenerife, Canary Islands, and consisted of spectral scans of up to 4 Å wide centred on the MgI wavelength. In all, some 350 spectra were obtained. Because the primary aim of the experiment was to study the zodiacal light, all spectra were recorded… Expand
Satellite measurements of high‐altitude twilight Mg+ emission
Observations made by the ultraviolet spectrometer on board the orbiting geophysical observatory Ogo 4 confirmed the presence of resonance scattering at 2800 A of Mg+ ions in the twilight subtropicalExpand
An improved model for the infrared emission from the zodiacal dust cloud: cometary, asteroidal and interstellar dust
We model the infrared emission from zodiacal dust detected by the IRAS and COBE missions, with the aim of estimating the relative contributions of asteroidal, cometary and interstellar dust to theExpand
Aircraft-based observation of meteoric material in lower-stratospheric aerosol particles between 15 and 68° N
Abstract. We analyse aerosol particle composition measurements from five research missions between 2014 and 2018 to assess the meridional extent of particles containing meteoric material in the upperExpand
As Eyes See Young Stars Assemble: Star and Planet Formation in the VLT Era
The river of time leading to this meeting on star and planet formation with the VLT can apparently be traced back to somewhere in the vicinity of Lake Geneva almost 25 years ago, in 1977. In thisExpand
Large-scale climatic patterns control large lightning fire occurrence in Canada and Alaska forest regions
[1] Large lightning wildfires in Canada and Alaska account for most of the area burnt and are main determiners of the age mosaic of the landscape. Such fires occur when positive midtroposphere heightExpand
Climate and wildfires in the North American boreal forest
A suggested return to the drier climate regimes of the past would imply major changes in the temporal dynamics of fire–climate relationships and in area burned, a reduction in the mean age of the forest, and changes in species composition of the North American boreal forest. Expand
Food quality of Aufwuchs from artificial streams receiving low levels of perturbations
Estimates of Aufwuchs food quality are important in evaluating the impact of pollutantsmore on higher trophic levels; however, the tendency of change with both taxonomic shifts and physiological adaptations tends to confound interpretations for water quality assessment. Expand

Ca II Emission Lines in the Twilight Spectrum
SPECTRA obtained at Saskatoon during the summer of 1955 showed sharp emission lines of wave-lengths 3933.8 A. and 3968.4 A. ±; 0.2 A. to be present at times in the twilight. The spectra were obtainedExpand
Rocket investigation of the Mg I and Mg II dayglow
The 2800-A dayglow of ionized magnesium in a sporadic E layer was measured by a rocket-borne ultraviolet spectrometer. Because the 2852-A line of neutral magnesium was less than 10 rayleighs whileExpand
Mass spectrometric measurements of positive ions at altitudes from 64 to 112 kilometers
A quadrupole mass spectrometer system employing a liquid nitrogen chilled zeolite pump has recently been developed for sampling positive ions at altitudes above 50 km. This system was flownExpand
A control system for a fully automatic pressure scanned Fabry-Pérot interferometer
An automatic pressure stepping control and re-cycling system for use with a Fabry-Perot interferometer is described. The latter uses narrow band interference filters to isolate the spectral region ofExpand
A simple, stable Fabry-P?rot etalon
The design and construction of a simple mechanical Fabry-Perot etalon is described. Attention to detail is an important feature of etalon design. The elimination of screwed junctions, byExpand
