Methyl mercury (mHg) can have a devastating effect on the integrity of the nervous system. Previous studies have shown that the fetus is at particular risk. The administration of m203Hg to the pregnant rat resulted in a substantially higher level in the brains of fetuses than in the dam (12.6 ± 2.6 (9) vs 3.0μg/gm dry wt.)(M ± SD).
