The efficiency of neuston sampling from freshwater Lake Baikal with Garrett’s metal screen and polycarbonate membrane filters has been estimated. It is revealed that both sampling methods demonstrate similar results. Method selection is determined by climatic and hydrological factors. The results of the present work demonstrate that sampling using a metal screen can be recommended for the complex characterization of neuston biofilm and estimation not only microbiological, but also molecular and… Expand

Autochthonous Bacteriophages in the Microbial Loop Structure of Different Biotopes of Lake Baikal
This article presents the results of research into autochthonous bacteriophages, a previously unknown element in the structure of the microbial loop in the ecosystem of deep oligotrophic Lake Baikal.Expand
Taxonomic composition of Lake Baikal bacterioneuston communities
The results showed the Lake Baikal surface microlayer to be a specific microbial community with low species diversity and relatively high abundance of photoheterotrophic microorganisms. Expand
Determination of Priority Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Water at The Trace Level
A procedure is proposed for the determination of priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in water by gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. The procedure differs from the known ones byExpand
Diversity of Aerobic Anoxygenic Phototrophs and Rhodopsin-Containing Bacteria in the Surface Microlayer, Water Column and Epilithic Biofilms of Lake Baikal
Unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis indicated a distinct discrepancy between epilithon and microbial communities of water (including neuston and plankton) in the 16S rRNA, pufM and rhodopsin genes. Expand
Role of Sea Surface Microlayer Properties in Cloud Formation
To date, the relative contribution of primary marine organic matter to the subset of atmospheric particles that nucleate cloud droplets is highly uncertain. Here, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN)Expand

Comparison of samplers for the biological characterization of the sea surface microlayer
The surface film of the hydrosphere covers more than 70% of the world's surface. The sea surface microlayer (SML) or “skin” of the ocean is a sink for natural and anthropogenic material originatingExpand
Comparison and validation of sampling strategies for the molecular microbial analysis of surface microlayers.
Data presented here clearly indicate that Bacteria respond significantly to this sea surface microlayer environment and further support the use of PC in sampling surface microlayers. Expand
Densities of bacteria and fungi in coastal surface films as determined by a membrane‐adsorption procedure1,2
A membrane-adsorption technique for counting surface slick microbial populations was evaluated. The simple procedure gave bacterial and fungal populations several orders of magnitude greater thanExpand
Physicochemical Studies of the Sea Surface Microlayer.
Through in situ and laboratory imitation experiments using glass plate, rotating drum, screen, and funnel samplers, the relationships between pH, surface tension, the concentrations of dissolved trace metals Cu and Pb, phosphate, and particulate and sampling thicknesses are carefully investigated. Expand
Studies on the sea surface microlayer. II. The layer of sudden change of physical and chemical properties.
The layer of sudden change of physical and chemical properties in surface seawater should serve as a basis for defining the sea surface microlayer should, and be regarded as the practical operational thickness of the seasurface microlayer. Expand
A field evaluation of plate and screen microlayer sampling techniques
Abstract Field studies of surface microlayer sampling methods involving simultaneous use of glass plates and two depths of screens have been conducted. Intercomparisons of the two methods are basedExpand
Comparative study of different hydrophobic devices for sampling lipid surface films and adherent microorganisms
The present work indicates that the use of a Teflon sheet is a suitable method for lipid film sampling, both for microbiological and chemical purposes. Expand
