The German healthcare system is a so-called Bismarckian system with statutory social health insurance (SHI) that covers almost 90% of the population. The system dates back to 1883, when the German Parliament made health insurance mandatory for certain employees nationwide. This SHI system was built upon existing voluntary or mandatory local schemes of social insurance and based on principles of solidarity and pay as you go.
