Methanol is an important cause of acute alcohol intoxication; it is ubiquitously present at home and in the workplace. Although the existing literature provides a reasonable insight into the immunological impact of ethanol and to a much lesser extent of isopropanol, much less data are available on methanol. We hypothesized on structural grounds that methanol would share the immunosuppressive properties of the two other short-chain alcohols. We report here that methanol increases the…
The dysregulation of the monocyte/macrophage effector function induced by isopropanol is mediated by the defective activation of distinct members of the AP-1 family of transcription factors.
TLDR
The results showed that Toll-like receptor 4 early signaling was preserved, as isopropanol did not change the kinase activity of the IL-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 in LPS-stimulated cells, and the nuclear factor-κB signaling cascade and the p38/c-Jun N-terminal kinase modules of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway were alcohol insensitive.
Mécanismes d'immunomodulation par les alcanols aliphatiques
TLDR
The results suggest the existence of interaction pockets of defined dimensions within intracellular targets that compromise the activation of the NFAT and NF-κB transcription factors and ultimately modulate the effector function of T lymphocytes.
Short-term immunological effects of non-ethanolic short-chain alcohols.
Aliphatic alcohol contaminants of illegally produced spirits inhibit phagocytosis by human granulocytes
TLDR
Due to their synergistic effects, it is possible that, in combination with ethanol, they may inhibit phagocytosis in a clinically meaningful way in episodic heavy drinkers.
Considerations regarding use of solvents in in vitro cell based assays
TLDR
The effects induced by solvents even at low concentrations are highly relevant for the interpretation of immunomodulatory effects evaluated in cell assays and show the importance of keeping solvent concentrations constant in serial dilution of any compound investigated in cell based assays.
The Size of the Unbranched Aliphatic Chain Determines the Immunomodulatory Potency of Short and Long Chain n-Alkanols*
TLDR
The pattern of immunomodulation and transcriptional dysregulation induced by the n-alkanol series suggested the existence of interaction pockets of defined dimensions within intracellular targets that compromise the activation of NFAT and NF-κB transcription factors and ultimately modulate the effector function of the T lymphocyte.
Benign Effect of Extremely Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Field on Brain Plasticity Assessed by Nitric Oxide Metabolism during Poststroke Rehabilitation
TLDR
It is concluded that ELF-EMF therapy is capable of promoting recovery in poststroke patients by significantly increased 3-nitrotyrosine and nitrate/nitrite levels and expression of NOS2 was insignificantly decreased in both groups.

Immunosuppressive Effect of Isopropanol: Down-Regulation of Cytokine Production Results from the Alteration of Discrete Transcriptional Pathways in Activated Lymphocytes1
TLDR
It is reported here that acute IPA exposure is detrimental to human T lymphocyte and NK cell activity in vitro in concentrations as low as 0.08–0.16% (13–26 mM) and suggested that IPA is potentially immunosuppressive to the adaptive and innate immune system.
Ethanol‐induced inhibition of cytokine release and protein degranulation in human neutrophils
TLDR
It is suggested that ethanol may modulate three major cytokines involved in alcoholic liver diseases, IL‐8, TNF‐α, and HGF, via three different mechanisms.
TLR4, Ethanol, and Lipid Rafts: A New Mechanism of Ethanol Action with Implications for other Receptor-Mediated Effects
TLDR
Results summarized in this review indicate that EtOH acts by altering the LPS-induced redistribution of components of the TLR4 complex within the lipid raft and that this is related to changes in actin cytoskeleton rearrangement, receptor clustering, and subsequent signaling.
Ethanol Blocks Leukocyte Recruitment and Endothelial Cell Activation In Vivo and In Vitro1
TLDR
The hypothesis that acute ethanol overexposure may increase the risk of infection and inhibit the host inflammatory response, in part, by blocking endothelial cell activation and subsequent immune cell-endothelial cell interactions required for efficient immune cell recruitment is supported.
Effect of methanol intoxication on spcific immune functions of albino rats
TLDR
The investigation concluded that repeated exposure of methanol profoundly suppressed the cell mediated and humoral immune functions in albino rats.
Reciprocal NFAT1 and NFAT2 Nuclear Localization in CD8+ Anergic T Cells Is Regulated by Suboptimal Calcium Signaling1
TLDR
This work provides new insight into how T cell stimulation conditions might dictate specific NFAT isoform activation and implicates NFAT2 involvement in the expression of anergy-related genes.
Acute Alcohol Exposure Exerts Anti-Inflammatory Effects by Inhibiting IκB Kinase Activity and p65 Phosphorylation in Human Monocytes1
TLDR
It is suggested that acute alcohol exposure modulates IκBα-independent NF-κB activity primarily by affecting phosphorylation of p65, which implicate an important role for IKKβ in the acute effects of alcohol in immune cells.
In Vivo Ethanol Exposure Down-Regulates TLR2-, TLR4-, and TLR9-Mediated Macrophage Inflammatory Response by Limiting p38 and ERK1/2 Activation1
TLDR
Acute ethanol exposure impaired macrophage responsiveness to multiple TLR agonists by inhibiting IL-6 and TNF-α production and inhibition of p38 and ERK1/2 activation, which was responsible for ethanol-induced suppression.
Characterization of antigen receptor response elements within the interleukin-2 enhancer.
TLDR
The uncoupling of antigen receptor and PKC requirements in these studies indicates that these signal pathways are, at least in part, distinct and integrated at the level of the gene.
Nuclear Factor of Activated T Cells Transcription Factor Nfatp Controls Superantigen-Induced Lethal Shock
TLDR
It is demonstrated that nuclear factor of activated T cells transcription factor, NFATp, controls susceptibility to superantigen-induced lethal shock in mice through its activation of TNF-α gene transcription, and it is suggestedNFATp as a potential selective target in the treatment of superantige- induced lethal shock.
