By controlling the surface reactance of impenetrable gradient metasurfaces it is possible to shape the phase front of reflected waves. This approach is similar to that used in conventional reflectarray antennas, where the phase of reflection from each array element is properly tuned. However, such phase-gradient reflectors always produce some parasitic scattering into unwanted directions.
