S100A4 (Mts1) is a member of a family of calcium-binding proteins of the EF-hand type, which are widely expressed in the nervous system, where they appear to be involved in the regulation of neuron survival, plasticity, and response to injury or disease. S100A4 has previously been demonstrated in astrocytes of the white matter and rostral migratory stream of the adult rat.
