Metastasis: a question of life or death
@article{Mehlen2006MetastasisAQ, title={Metastasis: a question of life or death}, author={Patrick Mehlen and Alain Puisieux}, journal={Nature Reviews Cancer}, year={2006}, volume={6}, pages={449-458} }
The metastatic process is highly inefficient — very few of the many cells that migrate from the primary tumour successfully colonize distant sites. One proposed mechanism to explain this inefficiency is provided by the cancer stem cell model, which hypothesizes that micrometastases can only be established by tumour stem cells, which are few in number. However, recent in vitro and in vivo observations indicate that apoptosis is an important process regulating metastasis. Here we stress that the…

The Metastatic Process: An Overview
- Biology, Medicine
- 2010
The metastatic process is characterized by the detachment of cancer cells from the primary sites followed by their dissemination throughout the bloodstream and/or lymph stream to distal sites where they proliferate to give rise to secondary tumours.
