It is generally believed that a metaphor tends to have a stronger emotional impact than a literal statement; however, there is no quantitative study establishing the extent to which this is true. Further, the mechanisms through which metaphors convey emotions are not well understood. We present the first data-driven study comparing the emotionality of metaphorical expressions with that of their literal counterparts. Our results indicate that metaphorical usages are, on average, significantly… Expand
Construction of a Chinese Corpus for the Analysis of the Emotionality of Metaphorical Expressions
TLDR
This work constructs a significant new corpus on metaphor, with 5,605 manually annotated sentences in Chinese, the first relatively large metaphor corpus with an annotation of emotions in Chinese and uses the corpus to explore and analyze the emotionality of metaphors. Expand
Metaphor comprehension in L2: Meaning, images and emotions
Abstract Non-linguistic components of metaphor understanding, emotions and mental images, have recently received attention within neurolinguistics and cognitive pragmatics, suggesting a role inExpand
Modelling the interplay of metaphor and emotion through multitask learning
TLDR
This paper investigates the relationship between metaphor and emotion within a computational framework, by proposing the first joint model of these phenomena, and demonstrates that metaphor identification and emotion prediction mutually benefit from joint learning. Expand
Chinese metaphor sentiment computing via considering culture
TLDR
This work builds a system to perform Chinese metaphor sentiment analysis that considers both context and target of a metaphor, as well as Chinese culture-related knowledge, and organizes cultural factors in the form of cultural attribute vectors. Expand
Phrase-Level Metaphor Identification Using Distributed Representations of Word Meaning
TLDR
This paper investigated the use of different word embeddings models to identify verb-noun pairs where the verb is used metaphorically and presented an approach based on distributional semantics to identify metaphors on the phrase-level. Expand
Verbal Multiword Expressions for Identification of Metaphor
TLDR
This work is the first attempt at analysing the interplay of metaphor and MWEs processing through the design of a neural architecture whereby classification of metaphors is enhanced by informing the model of the presence of Mwes. Expand
MetaVR: Understanding metaphors in the mind and relation to emotion through immersive, spatial interaction
TLDR
The design of MetaVR, a system to support the creation and exploration of immersive, multimodal metaphoric experiences, highlights the potential of using virtual embodied interaction as a tool to study cognitive processes involved in more deliberate/functional uses of metaphor and how this relates to emotion processing. Expand
MelBERT: Metaphor Detection via Contextualized Late Interaction using Metaphorical Identification Theories
TLDR
This work proposes a novel metaphor detection model, namely metaphor-aware late interaction over BERT (MelBERT), which not only leverages contextualized word representation but also benefits from linguistic metaphor identification theories to detect whether the target word is metaphorical. Expand
Uyghur Metaphor Detection Via Considering Emotional Consistency
“Metaphor detection plays an important role in tasks such as machine translation and human-machine dialogue. As more users express their opinions on products or other topics on socialmedia throughExpand
Word Embedding and WordNet Based Metaphor Identification and Interpretation
TLDR
An unsupervised learning method that identifies and interprets metaphors at word-level without any preprocessing, outperforming strong baselines in the metaphor identification task and extends to interpret the identified metaphors, paraphrasing them into their literal counterparts, so they can be better translated by machines. Conceptual Metaphors of Affect
Emotional experiences are often described in metaphoric language. A major question in linguistics and cognitive science is whether such metaphoric linguistic expressions reflect a deeper principle ofExpand
Metaphorical Sentences Are More Emotionally Engaging than Their Literal Counterparts
TLDR
It is indicated that conventional metaphorical expressions are more emotionally evocative than literal expressions, as the amygdala and the anterior portion of the hippocampus were more active in the metaphorical sentences. Expand

Specifying Viewpoint and Information Need with Affective Metaphors: A System Demonstration of the Metaphor-Magnet Web App/Service
TLDR
The practical uses of metaphor as a basis for formulating affective information queries are explored, via a demonstration of a system for metaphor interpretation and generation called Metaphor Magnet. Expand

This article describes a novel approach to automated determination of affect associated with metaphorical language. Affect in language is understood to mean the attitude toward a topic that a writerExpand
Metaphors We Think With: The Role of Metaphor in Reasoning
TLDR
It is found that exposure to even a single metaphor can induce substantial differences in opinion about how to solve social problems: differences that are larger, for example, than pre-existing Differences in opinion between Democrats and Republicans. Expand
Multilingual Affect Polarity and Valence Prediction in Metaphor-Rich Texts
TLDR
Novel algorithms that integrate triggers for cognitive, affective, perceptual and social processes with stylistic and lexical information are presented and it is shown that the developed affect polarity and valence prediction technology of metaphor-rich texts is portable and works equally well for different languages. Expand
Literal and Metaphorical Sense Identification through Concrete and Abstract Context
TLDR
An algorithm is introduced that uses the hypothesis that metaphorical word usage is correlated with the degree of abstractness of the word's context to classify a word sense in a given context as either literal (denotative) or metaphorical (connotative). Expand
