Generating metaphors is a difficult task as it requires understanding nuanced relationships between abstract concepts. In this paper, we aim to generate a metaphoric sentence given a literal expression by replacing relevant verbs. Guided by conceptual metaphor theory, we propose to control the generation process by encoding conceptual mappings between cognitive domains to generate meaningful metaphoric expressions. To achieve this, we develop two methods: 1) using FrameNet-based embeddings to…

IMPLI: Investigating NLI Models’ Performance on Figurative Language
The IMPLI 007 (Idiomatic and Metaphoric Paired Language 008 Inference) dataset is introduced, an English dataset consisting of paired sentences spanning idioms and metaphors, and it is shown that NLI models based on RoBERTa fine-tuned on this dataset can reliably detect entailment rela016 tionship between figurative phrases with their literal counterparts.
MOVER: Mask, Over-generate and Rank for Hyperbole Generation
Automatic and human evaluation results show that the proposed unsupervised method for hyperbole generation is effective at generating hyperbolic paraphrase sentences and outperforms several baseline systems.
Probing Simile Knowledge from Pre-trained Language Models
This paper probes simile knowledge from PLMs to solve the SI and SG tasks in the unified framework of simile triple completion for the first time and adopts a secondary training process with the masked language model (MLM) loss to enhance the prediction diversity of candidate words in the masked position.
A MBI P UN : Generating Puns with Ambiguous Context
We propose a simple yet effective way to generate pun sentences that does not require any training on existing puns. Our approach is inspired by humor theories that ambiguity comes from the context
AmbiPun: Generating Humorous Puns with Ambiguous Context
We propose a simple yet effective way to generate pun sentences that does not require any training on existing puns. Our approach is inspired by humor theories that ambiguity comes from the context
HypoGen: Hyperbole Generation with Commonsense and Counterfactual Knowledge
This paper tackles the under-explored and challenging task: sentence-level hyperbole generation with a representative syntactic pattern for intensification and systematically study the semantic relationships between each component in hyperboles.
ePiC: Employing Proverbs in Context as a Benchmark for Abstract Language Understanding
A high-quality crowdsourced dataset of narratives for employing proverbs in context as a benchmark for abstract language understanding and provides fine-grained annotation of aligned spans between proverbs and narratives, and contains minimal lexical overlaps between narratives and proverbs.

Metaphoric Paraphrase Generation
It is shown that while the lexical replacement baseline is capable of producing accurate paraphrases, they often lack metaphoricity, while the metaphor masking model excels in generating metaphoric sentences while performing nearly as well with regard to fluency and paraphrase quality.
Discovering Conceptual Metaphors using Source Domain Spaces
This article describes the method of building conceptual spaces, that is, defining the vocabulary that characterizes a Source Domain of a conceptual metaphor of a Conceptual metaphor, and how these conceptual spaces are used to group linguistic metaphors into conceptual metaphors.
Word Embedding and WordNet Based Metaphor Identification and Interpretation
An unsupervised learning method that identifies and interprets metaphors at word-level without any preprocessing, outperforming strong baselines in the metaphor identification task and extends to interpret the identified metaphors, paraphrasing them into their literal counterparts, so they can be better translated by machines.
CorMet: A Computational, Corpus-Based Conventional Metaphor Extraction System
CorMet is a corpus-based system for discovering metaphorical mappings between concepts. It does this by finding systematic variations in domain-specific selectional preferences, which are inferred
Weeding out Conventionalized Metaphors: A Corpus of Novel Metaphor Annotations
This paper introduces a crowdsourced novel metaphor annotation layer for an existing metaphor corpus, analyzes the corpus and investigates correlations between novelty and features that are typically used in metaphor detection, such as concreteness ratings and more semantic features like the Potential for Metaphoricity.
Automatic Identification of Conceptual Metaphors With Limited Knowledge
This paper describes research on identifying conceptual metaphors based on corpus data using as little background knowledge as possible, to ease transfer to new languages and to minimize any bias introduced by the knowledge base construction process.
Generating similes effortlessly like a Pro: A Style Transfer Approach for Simile Generation
This paper proposes a method to automatically construct a parallel corpus by transforming a large number of similes collected from Reddit to their literal counterpart using structured common sense knowledge and fine-tune a pretrained sequence to sequence model, BART, on the literal-simile pairs to gain generalizability.
A Computational System of Metaphor Generation with Evaluation Mechanism
This study regards metaphor generation as a process where an expression consisting of a target (A) is modified by certain features to become a metaphorical expression of the form "target (A) like
MetaNet: Deep semantic automatic metaphor analysis
A system that makes use of a repository of formalized frames and metaphors to automatically detect, categorize, and analyze expressions of metaphor in corpora is described.
Round Up The Usual Suspects: Knowledge-Based Metaphor Generation
The elasticity of metaphor as a communication strategy has spurred philosophers to question its ability to mean anything at all. If a metaphor can elicit different responses from different people in
