ABSTRACT Ruminant herbivores utilize a symbiotic relationship with microorganisms in their rumen to exploit fibrous foods for nutrition. We report the metagenome sequences of the greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) rumen digesta, revealing a diverse community of microbes and some novel hydrolytic enzymes.

REVIEW: The rumen microbiome: Composition, abundance, diversity, and new investigative tools
TLDR
The latest assessment of microbiota diversity in the rumen ecosystem is reported and the molecular techniques and the newly available “omic” technologies, based on DNA and RNA sequence analysis, which allow for new insights into the structure and functions of these complex microbial communities are summarized.
SEASONAL VARIATION OF IN VITRO DIGESTIBILITY IN THE KUDU, Tragelaphus strepsiceros
TLDR
Three substrates used in in vitro fermentations yielded high cellulose digestibilities during the dry winter months and organic matter digestibilities followed similar trends but did not reflect total rumen fermentative ability.
Isolation and characterization of superior rumen bacteria of cattle (Bos taurus) and potential application in animal feedstuff
TLDR
Rumen bacteria which have potential application in animal feed stuffs were isolated and characterized and indicated that, these isolates are superior and may have potential to be used as microbial feed additive in ruminants if fed in higher quantity.
Status of the phylogenetic diversity census of ruminal microbiomes.
TLDR
The results of this study may serve as a framework to assess the significance of individual populations to rumen functions and to guide future studies to identify the alpha and global diversity of ruminal microbiomes.
EBI metagenomics—a new resource for the analysis and archiving of metagenomic data
TLDR
A new metagenomics resource is developed that allows users to easily submit raw nucleotide reads for functional and taxonomic analysis by a state-of-the-art pipeline, and have them automatically stored in the European Nucleotide Archive.
Improved techniques for dissociating particle-associated mixed ruminal microorganisms from ruminal digesta solids.
TLDR
Two methods were considered most effective, based on microscopy; both removed similar amounts of PAB and PAB plus PAP and values that exceeded those reported previously for removal of PAM from ruminal digesta solids.
