The metabolic syndrome is a worldwide epidemic, setting the stage for type 2 diabetes and its microvascular complications, and acceleration of macrovascular disease. Insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, thrombotic disorders and adiposity define the metabolic syndrome and contribute to endothelial dysfunction and, subsequently, to accelerated atherosclerosis.
