Orthophosphate (Pi) is an essential macronutrient that plays a central role in virtually all major metabolic processes in plants, particularly photosynthesis and respiration. Many metabolites are Pi monoesters, whereas the phosphoanhydride bonds of compounds such as ATP function to transfer energy
